Portfolio
For almost every organization that I have been a part of, I became a part of it because I was asked to (or offered to) design their website. I have been developing websites since early 2004, working with HTML/XHTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, and a little bit of JavaScript. From mid-2004 to mid-2006 I worked with the phpBB bulletin board software as a framework for a number of experimental sites, and wrote HTML by hand for other sites. Since 2007, I have adopted WordPress as my CMS of choice, and have gained an extensive amount of experience customizing theme/layout elements within WordPress and writing custom (private) plugins in order to optimize WordPress for particular content management needs.
This page lists a portfolio of websites that I have developed and continue to maintain, I may be available to work on developing a custom WordPress-based website to meet your needs. Please contact me if you’re interested. (Rates are negotiable.)

ATV — American University Television
Developed for the student-run television station at American University, emphases include distribution and accessibility of the video content produced by the station’s shows–including support for live streaming, downloading of video clips and full episodes or watching them in-line with Flash Player and HTML5 support, and support for RSS/podcast feeds–and recruiting AU students to join the organization. The site was built on a multisite-enabled installation of WordPress, allowing each television show within ATV to manage their own blog as part of the auatv.com website. Utilizing WordPress’ advanced custom post types feature allows for site-wide integration & management of episodes and clips for presentation on the main ATV site.
Built On: WordPress 3.0 (Multi-Site), using the Mystique theme by Digitalnature on the main site; the show sites use the default Twenty Ten WordPress theme. Includes video playback using JW Player and podcasting support using Blubrry PowerPress.
American University Student Government
Developed for the undergraduate student government at American University and the nearly-three-dozen departments associated with it. The development methodology for this site is to focus on catering to the unique needs of the different departments in the SG–helping students connect to them and helping them provide their specific services to students–all while unifying them together under one umbrella website. Primary elements include coordinating communication (through blog posts, media releases, e-mail listservs, Facebook/Twitter integration, photos and videos, etc.) and providing a means for students to contact SG members and find out how they can get involved. A multisite-enabled installation of WordPress is used to facilitate the department sites.
Built On: WordPress 3.0 (Multi-Site), using the Traction theme by The Theme Foundry on the main site; the department sites use the default default Twenty Ten WordPress theme and other assorted free themes.
This site is still in development and will launch on August 24, 2010.
phpBB Weekly
Designed for a podcast that is recorded live over uStream on a weekly basis. The homepage serves the dual purpose of promoting the content of upcoming episodes (using a collapsible interface to show/hide promotional episode descriptions) and providing a Flash audio player & download links to the most recent released episode. Furthermore, the homepage automatically switches into “live mode” 10 minutes before a show is scheduled to begin airing live, revealing a uStream live player and chat room. Other sections allow for promoting the show, browsing past episodes, subscribing to the podcast, and following the show’s status on Twitter and Facebook.
Built On: WordPress 3.0 (Standalone) running a modified version of the Aeros/Aerodrome themes by TheBuckmaker. Includes podcasting support using Blubrry PowerPress.
The Smorgasbord of Douglas Bell
Developed as a personal website, intended not only to host a personal blog but also to allow friends and family to keep track of my activities, and to provide access to my activities and past work. Includes integrations with a number of external social media services.
Built On: WordPress 3.0 (Standalone) using the “Wood is Good” theme by Zoarra Solutions.
California 17th District PTA
http://www.17thdistrictpta.org
Built for a non-profit organization, the 17th District PTA oversees around 100 PTA units in San Mateo County. Primary function of the site is to provide forms and resources to local unit officers, promote 17th District events, notify units about due dates, and provide a means of contact to the officers. The site is also periodically used to relay information from California State and National PTA levels. Custom-developed features include an online form for submitting annual roster data, and an advanced officers directory with an integrated contact form (which has since spun off into my Officers Directory plugin), both of which include extensive configuration options from the back-end administration. This site also powers sub-sites for council PTAs within the district.
Built On: WordPress 3.0 (Multi-Site), using the Fusion theme by Digitalnature.
